On the way to the boutique, Steven sensed Elizabeth had become uneasy, and when she fell silent, he was drawn to touch her. Perhaps it was the past she didn’t want to recall or maybe the fact they were rushing into marriage. Yet as he stopped in front of the shop, God’s peace remained, confirming that he was doing the right thing by marrying Elizabeth.

Elizabeth kissed his hand and smiled up at him. “What will you do while I’m trying on gowns?”

“Anxiously wait for your return.”

Her smile brightened.

Nicole opened the car door and paused before getting out. “John, why don’t you say things like that to me?”

“Okay.” John cleared his throat. He raised an arm, leaned close to Nicole, and placed a palm across his heart. He looked as if he was practicing a theatrical performance. “How thee has captured my heart, mind, and are wasting time when there’s a wedding today. Let me count the ways.”

Nicole smacked his arm. “Come on, Elizabeth.”

Elizabeth slid from her seat, snatched her bag, and glanced at him. “If I hear from Phillip, I’ll let you know.” She closed the door and entered the boutique.

John stared at him oddly in the rearview mirror. “Elizabeth got mighty quiet. Do you think I said something wrong?”

“I know she’s got a lot on her mind, the wedding I’m sure. We spoke about a few things this morning, the boys, how Luke will take the news of our wedding, and her concerns I wouldn’t allow the Roberts to take their rightful place in her and the children’s lives. I have a feeling there’s more.”

“I’m sure she’ll share it with you when the time is right. Not like you, keeping your wedding plans a secret from her.”

“Slightly different. We have only a few hours and I still need to get our rings from the safety deposit box.”

“Won’t she be surprised that you saved your rings after all this time. How about when Mike gets here, send him over to the bank. He’s still listed on the account?”

Steven nodded. “Yes, and he’s here.”

“I’ll check on the girls,” John said as they exited the car.

Steven joined Mike at the front of the car and watched John enter the shop. His gaze caught a glimpse of Elizabeth as she passed by one of the mannequins and her smile warmed him. “Can you pick up the rings?”

“I can. The florist will have the flowers delivered in three hours so I’ll need to hurry. The pastor from your church is free and said to call when you’re ready since he lives in front of you on the hill.”

Lord, this is really happening. Steven smiled. “Pretty convenient, don’t you think?” He sought just one more glimpse of the woman he loved. “I need you to do me another favor. I know I haven’t wanted to discuss the cancer and have almost been in denial…but I’m ready to meet your friend at the Moffitt Cancer Center. Can you get me in? I know I might have waited too—”

“I’ll get you in.
